Homebuyer Training

buying a home

The Preservation Resource Center (PRC) - 923 Tchoupitoulas St. 504-581-7032. prc@prcno.org. This private, non-profit offers a variety of classes and resources for homebuyers, renovators, or investors, and it publishes the award-winning Preservation in Print every month.

New Buyer, Old House - The PRC offers a certified training program for first-time homebuyers. Classes have 13 workshops to acquaint prospective buyers with the details of purchase contracts, insurance, fiscal fitness, budgeting, home maintenance, and more. Also, after finishing these classes, you may be eligible for low interest bond money and other special deals.

Six Ways to Get a House - Talks will provide informative updates on public incentive programs like the blighted housing program and the land bank, and tips on strategies for house shoppers in the market for a fixer-upper.

Renovator's Happy Hour - If you're thinking about renovating, come to one of the PRC's monthly happy hours, held at the site of a recent or ongoing renovation, and hear firsthand from the owners or contractors what it was like.

Live in a Landmark Tours - Free to the public, the PRC teams up with neighborhood associations to take groups on a walk through different historic neighborhoods. It's a great way to get to know another neighborhood, or to learn more about your own.
