Where to get those hard-to-replace historic details
Thursday, February 1st, 2007A surge of construction in the region means many people are redoing their historic homes and wondering, “Where can I get French doors?” or “Do they sell this kind of cypress baseboard anymore?”
Fortunately, there are a number of places throughout the city that specialize in salvaged and reconstruction historic materials. Here are just a few of my favorites:
The Green Project - 2831 Marais St. 504-578-0240 (or, if their phone still isn’t restored when you call, you can try thegreenproject@bellsouth.net) or www.thegreenproject.org. This gutsy group of volunteers was stocking salvaged materials before the storm to keep them from ending up in landfills, but now their collection of historic materials is higher than ever before. Why? Because they’ve started a deconstruction project for historic homes where they volunteer to deconstruct the home, saving all the salvagable historic pieces they can including floors, true-size rafters, historic barge board, mantels, pocket doors and other pieces. Once I went there and say a half dozen church pews. There’s got to be something cool someone could do with those! They also have a motely collection of partially used paint, perfect for that tiny project and perfect for keeping excess paint out of landfills.
Ricca’s Architectural Sales - 511 Solomon St. 504-488-5524 or www.riccas.com. This company has been a mainstay for historic renovators both before and after the storm, and if you’re looking for that specific something and can’t figure out where to get it, you should check in here first. They can also tell you where to go to get your doors dipped, a process that costs about $50, brings your doors back to the bare wood and saves you hours of scraping and hand cramps!
Habitat Restore - 2830 Royal St. 504-943-2240 or www.habitat-nola.org/restore. This non-profit store sells donated and overstocked items like cabinets, sinks, windows, doors, lighting fixtures and furniture.
Carrollton Lumber & Wrecking Co. - 2938 Leonidas St. at 8600 Earhart Blvd 504-861-3681. This company has been open since 1922, survived flooding and is open on limited hours. Their focus right now is on hard to find recycled roofing materials including asbestos, ridge tiles, Spanish terra cotta, slate and ornamental details.
The Bank - 1842 Felicity St. 504-523-2702.
Wilkerson Row - 3137 Magazine St. 504-899-3311.
