Political satire order of the day for big parade
Saturday, February 17th, 2007It’s that time of year again! Most of the businesses down here have shut down for a much-needed five-day Mardi Gras weekend culminating on Tuesday with a slew of celebrations across the city.So rather than the regular real estate post, I thought I’d tell you a little bit about two of my favorite parades. It starts with Krewe du Vieux, the only parade that goes through the French Quarter, and one that I go to every year without fail.
This parade is one of the few that doesn’t have big tractor drawn floats. Instead, mules, bikes and sometimes groups of krewe members pull floats through the Marigny and into the French Quarter.
This year the parade rolled on February 3, and it stayed true to its tradition of often adult-themed floats all celebrating this year’s theme “Habitat for Insanity.”
Last night I got to see my favorite big parade, Le Krewe D’Etat roll from St. Charles down to Canal Street under this year’s theme “KDTV in Dictavision.”
The only big parade that relies on political satire, this year in Louisiana politics proved an inspiring one for the Krewe. Claiming KDTV is better than HDTV, all the floats were TV-themed. Here are some of my favorites:
“Ameri con Idle” spoofed the mayor’s and the president’s lack of action toward the city.
“Dis Casa Vieja” celebrating the new Hispanic culture growing in the city.
“Lone House on the Prairie” a spoof on some of the flooded out areas of the city which the official Krewe D’Etat brochure describes best. “To rebuild, or not to rebuild: that is the question. But is there any answer in sight? Wait, look there! Beyond the uncut grass, just past the demolished houses, high off the ground, like a beacon for all to see stands the Lone House on the Prairie. With no grocery store, neighbor or other living thing in sight, these pioneers of the post-flood wasteland have put their money where their house is: fifteen feet off the ground.”
And of course, it wouldn’t be a spoof on the past year without float number 11 “I wants to be a Millionaire” spoofing our infamous Congressman, William Jefferson, or as the krewe likes to call him, “Dollar Bill” Jefferson.
Next up for me? Hurrying to finish my costume on Lundi Gras (that’s this Monday for the uninitiated) so I can have it ready to march in the St. Ann parade by Mardi Gras.
Happy Carnival!
