Rents Raised for Section 8

Monday, June 26th, 2006

The Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO) recently announced it will raise its vouchers for rental assistance, Section 8, to keep pace with the rising rental rates in Post Katrina New Orleans.

As of July 1, 2006, the vouchers will be increased to what HANO believes will be 120 percent of fair market value for the city. How do the numbers break down? Monthly rent for a one bedroom apartment would fetch $964, a two bedroom $1,128, three bedroom $1,447 and so on up to a seven bedroom at $2,275.

For many affordable housing advocates, these increases are crucial in a city where rent prices have skyrocketed. While subsidized housing can become problematic for a neighborhood if there is too high a concentration in one location, or if the units are neglected by the owner, many see Section 8, or scattered site housing, as a good way to ensure mixed-income housing in an area. The key is responsible owners and tenants who are respectful of their neighbors.

To become a landlord qualified to receive Section 8 rents, email landlords@hano.org or call 504-670-3300 or 504-561-1036.
